Slower and slower

Okay, it’s now almost 10:30 and time to start for the Disneyland Hotel, where we’ll meet my parents and aunt and uncle for brunch at Goofy’s Kitchen. Hey, we were able to do four great attractions in less than ninety minutes! Woo hoo!

We need to get over to Tomorrowland and take the monorail to Downtown Disney, which is only a short walk from the hotel. Pirates exits back onto Royal Street, so we take a quick look up the street to the Club 33 entrance – see you again tomorrow! – and then head out of New Orleans Square, back through Adventureland, and towards the hub.

My breathing, unfortunately, is not getting any better. I’m still wheezing, still getting only about half a lungful in every breath. Even though Disneyland is much smaller than the Magic Kingdom, right now it’s feeling just as big or bigger, since I am running out of breath so quickly.

My family’s being very understanding, and probably more than a little concerned. I hate to have this wreck our day or even just slow us down, but I find myself having to sit and catch my breath even after only a short walk.

There’s a couple of empty benches at the hub, and I plop down in one to let my breathing settle. It really is a gorgeous day, and asthma or not I could probably enjoy just sitting here, people- and scenery-watching, for some time. While I rest, Brandon and Bob roam around the hub taking some pictures. There’s the familiar “Partners” statue here of Walt and Mickey, just like in Florida, but surrounding it here are some smaller statues of other Disney characters.

After just a few minutes I have enough air to continue, so we gather Bob and Brandon and continue on, past the Matterhorn into Tomorrowland. We pass a lengthy line for the Finding Nemo Submarine ride, the longest line we’ve seen today. I remember riding the original attraction back in ’82, and marveling that one of the sights on the ride was topless mermaids. Hey, I was a teenage boy at the time.

It takes us a bit to locate the ramp up to the Monorail station – I’m glad there’s a ramp instead of stairs – and we walk up. There’s a wonderful view from up here – the submarine lagoon below, the Matterhorn towering above, and the monorail track winding around it all.

Before too long Monorail Blue appears over the lagoon, and we know it’s only a minute or two until it will be in the station. I’m excited! I don’t think I rode the monorail on my last Disney trip, so this will be new. Besides, as I’ve said, riding the monorail is the quintessential Disney experience.

The train glides into the station, the doors open, and several people get out and walk to the exit. Then our gates open, and we climb on board – I have to duck, since these are smaller compartments than on the Walt Disney World trains, made for sitting only.

And we’re off – our first monorail ride of the trip, and probably my first at Disneyland ever!

Ah, you should have turned left from the Pirates exit, and headed to the New Orleans Train station, then take that to Tomorrowland, the Tomorrowland station is really close to the monorail entrance, you could have rested AND walked less!

Yep, you're right. Didn't think of that at the time, obviously. But then, it's really not that far of a walk anyway, plus I was still learning how limited my walking was going to be.
